HISTORY OF FATHER’S DAY
Happy Father’s Day to all fathers, grandfathers, great grandfathers, God fathers, Pet Fathers, or to those who have acted like a father. The first official Father’s Day celebration was held on June 19, 1910 in Spokane, Washington.  The idea of having a Father’s Day celebration was created by Sonora Smart Dodd in 1909.  She wanted to do something to honor her own father, a Civil War veteran, who was a single parent that raised six children.  President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers and designated the 3rd Sunday in June as Father’s Day in 1966.  In 1972, President Richard Nixon signed a proclamation declaring that Father’s Day be an official holiday.  The Bible tells us in Exodus 20:12 to “Honor your father and your mother that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving to you.”

JUNETEENTH
Juneteenth will be celebrated on Thursday, June 19th.  This day marks the official day that slavery ended in the United States.  News about President Abraham Lincoln signing the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, did not reach the 250,000 slaves in Galveston, Texas on June 19, 1865. The slaves heard the message from a group of Union soldiers that had been sent to Galveston to announce that all enslaved people were declared free. In 1866, Juneteenth started off being called “Freedom Day” thus making it one of the oldest African American holidays. President Joe Biden signed a legislation on June 17, 2021 making Juneteenth a federal holiday.  Many African Americans recognize Juneteenth not only as the end of slavery but also as a way to continue the fight for civil rights and equality.
